1. Temperature and oxygen are recognised as the main drivers of altitudinal limits of species distributions. However, the two factors are linked, and both decrease with altitude, why their effects are difficult to disentangle. 2. This was experimentally addressed using aquatic macroinvertebrates; larvae of Andesiops (Ephemeroptera), Claudioperla, (Plecoptera), Scirtes (Coleoptera) and Anomalocosmoecus (Trichoptera), and the amphipod Hyalella in an Ecuadorian glacier‐fed stream (4100–4500 m a.s.l.). The following were performed: (i) quantitative benthic sampling at three sites to determine altitudinal patterns in population densities, (ii) transplants of the five taxa upstream of their natural altitudinal limit to test the short‐term (14 days) effect on survival, and (iii) in situ experiments of locomotory activity as a proxy for animal response to relatively small differences in temperature (5 °C vs. 10 °C) and oxygen saturation (55% vs. 62%). 3. The transplant experiment reduced survival to a varying degree among taxa, but Claudioperla survived well at a site where it did not naturally occur. In the in situ experiment, Scirtes and Hyalella decreased their activity at lower oxygen saturation, whereas Andesiops and Anomalocosmoecus did so at a low temperature. The decrease in activity from a high to a low temperature and oxygen for the five taxa was significantly correlated with their mortality in the transplant experiment. 4. Together the present experiments indicate that even relatively small differences in temperature and oxygen may produce effects explaining ecological patterns, and depending on the taxon, either water temperature or oxygen saturation, without clear interacting effects, are important drivers of altitudinal limits.  相似文献

Seagrass meadows are important primary producers in SE-Asia coastal areas that are increasingly threatened by human activities resulting in a deterioration of the underwater light environment. The resilience of seagrass meadows to decreasing light availability should be approached in an integrative manner, because they shelter complex communities of primary and secondary producers. The aim of this study was to measure the in situ metabolism of a seagrass community under different levels of light availability following changes in the water column dissolved oxygen (DO) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), the sediment redox potential and seagrass production. Net community production (NCP) and respiration were measured along two diel cycles to produce a balance of NCP under different light treatments. On a daily basis, at full irradiance, the community metabolism presented a net production which was close to zero, with values of −7.75 to 16.6 mmol O2 m−2 day−1 for DO, and −56.8 to 22.7 mmol C m−2 day−1 for DIC in the first and second incubation runs, respectively. Compensation irradiance for the NCP was thus found to be close to 80% of the present light availability. Shading resulted in a general decrease in the sediment redox potential, while the initial redox potential had not recovered 6 days after exposure to full sunlight. This community appears to be in a fragile equilibrium with the environment, and any minor decrease in the water transparency would lead to a shift from an autotrophic to a heterotrophic system.  相似文献

This study describes the application of a protocol for biological assessment of water quality at first to third order streams at Serra dos órg?os, an area covered by Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Major impacts in the region are domestic effluents and deforestation. Our main objective is to establish biocriteria for the establishment of the Serra dos órg?os Multimetric Index (SOMI) based on benthic macroinvertebrates. We used data from previous studies, sampled by experienced biologists, from 1999 through 2002. The benthic macroinvertebrate community was sampled in 12 reference sites and seven impaired sites in three river basins: Guapimirim, Macaé and Grande, all from the same bioregion. From the 22 tested metrics, 6 were included in the SOMI (% Diptera, % Coleoptera, Family Taxa, EPT Taxa, BMWP-CETEC and % Shredders). Scores (5, 3 or 1) were developed for these metrics to allow for aggregation into the index. Seven intermediately impaired sites were used for evaluating the applicability of the multimetric index. We concluded that the SOMI is a robust easy-to-apply tool for biomonitoring programs in the Serra dos órg?os region, south-east Brazil. Abundance and composition of nematode fauna were examined in the benthic microbial mats and upper sediment layer of the littoral of acidified (pH 4.6 to 5.7) lakes. Nematodes constituted from 58% to 90% of all the invertebrates present (excluding protozoans and rotifers). In the examined material, the majority of nematodes was represented by 3 taxa of which Ironus was found specifically associated with the mats. It was concluded that the persistence of benthic mats may be linked to the metabolic activity of the associated nematode fauna.  相似文献

The densities of two benthic fishes, the Siberian stone loach (Noemacheilus barbatulus) and the wrinklehead sculpin (Cottus nozawae), and the biomass of their food resources (i.e., periphyton and benthic invertebrates) were compared between forest and grassland streams in northern Hokkaido, Japan, to examine whether riparian deforestation had positive effects on the benthic fishes via enhancement of food availability. The comparisons indicated that riparian vegetation had little influence on periphyton, invertebrates, or fishes. Regression analysis indicated that spatial variations in loach and sculpin densities were explained more by substrate heterogeneity, competitor abundance, or both, rather than by food abundance. However, when the two species were combined as benthic insectivores, a strong correlation was found between total benthic fish density and invertebrate biomass. Our results suggest that, although total benthic fish abundance was food limited, riparian vegetation had no positive effects via food availability on the benthic fishes in our streams.  相似文献

Stones of different rock types often accrue different amounts of periphytic algae. Although algal biomass may be positively related to stone roughness, the confounding role of rock chemistry is unclear. This independent effect of rock chemistry on benthic algae was tested using the nutrient-diffusing technique, by incorporating powdered stone, rather than nutrients, into the agar matrix. Rocks tested were sandstone, obsidian, schist, greywacke, pumice, gypsum, limestone, serpentine, and phosphorite. Petri-dishes containing powdered rock and agar, and covered with a permeable cellulose filter, were incubated in eight pools in a granitic stream. Algal biomass did not differ among any of the nine rock types and plain agar control, whereas biomass differed among the concurrently placed nutrient diffusing substrates (the stream was phosphorus-limited). Algal composition was more related to an upstream-downstream gradient (for filamentous algae) and pool-specific effects (deposition of fine sediment for diatoms) than rock chemistry. This minimal effect of rock chemistry may be caused by the low dissolution rate of stones. Handling editor: J. Padisak  相似文献

The tube dwelling diatom Berkeleya rutilans (Trentepohl) Grunow plays a key role as early colonizer and bloom former in coastal zones. Exuding large quantities of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), it can form dense colonies in mucilaginous macroscopic branches, containing thousands of cells. Due to their pronounced three dimensional growths of its mucilaginous structures, it supports a variety of organisms and traps grains and detritus, which makes it an important habitat former and ecosystem engineer, contributing to sediment stabilization, which is a crucial issue in sedimentary areas. In the present study we investigated the identity and structural morphology of B. rutilans, blooming in a tidal channel in Northern Patagonia (S40° 43′ W64° 56′) and experimentally tested its potential physiological responses (e.g. growth rate) to nutrient elevation. The observed morphological plasticity and measured high growth rates under nutrient exposure make B. rutilans a likely indicator for eutrophication in sedimentary marine habitats. As to our knowledge the present study provides the first record of B. rutilans for Argentinean waters, we discussed the potential reasons for its occurrence and evaluated the ecological impacts of its presence. Due to the observed high colonization capability and rapid response to environmental alterations (e.g. eutrophication, substrate changes) it seems to benefit from human activities, which will consequently favor its further expansion within the disturbed area.  相似文献

Little is known about the potential activity of microbial communities in hypersaline sediment ecosystems. Ribosomal tag libraries of DNA and RNA extracted from the sediment of Lake Strawbridge (Western Australia) revealed bacterial and archaeal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) with high RNA/DNA ratios providing evidence for the presence of ‘rare’ but potentially “active” taxa. Among the ‘rare’ bacterial taxa Halomonas, Salinivibrio and Idiomarina showed the highest protein synthesis potential. Rare but ‘active’ archaeal OTUs were related to the KTK 4A cluster and the Marine-Benthic-Groups B and D. We present the first molecular analysis of the microbial diversity and protein synthesis potential of rare microbial taxa in a hypersaline sediment ecosystem.  相似文献

Human activities have the potential to alter the diversity and composition of biological communities in natural environments, which can cause changes in ecosystem functioning. This has led to the development of environmental assessment techniques that take into account species identity, as species can contribute differently to various ecosystem processes. Biological Traits Analysis (BTA) is used to compare the abundances of specific biological traits in samples to produce information about how ecosystem functioning may change across a specific terrestrial or aquatic system. In the present study, BTA was used to assess the influence of municipal wastewater effluent on benthic marine communities in near shore soft sediments in four locations across the Canadian Arctic Territory of Nunavut, Canada. Shifts in trait composition were assessed relative to indicators of sediment enrichment (sediment chlorophyll, organic content, degree of anoxia), and natural variation in habitat characteristics (water depth, porosity, average grain size) at a site receiving wastewater and a reference site in each sampling location. The results indicated a mild enrichment effect of wastewater, as evidenced by changes in trait composition at three of the four sites that received wastewater inputs. However, the amount of variance in trait composition explained by metrics of wastewater enrichment in these locations were generally equal to or lower than the amount of variance explained by sediment characteristics related to natural processes. These results provide greater insight into the underlying causes and consequences of human activities than more traditional methods for environmental impact assessment, and can be directly applied in a management context.  相似文献

Drought conditions have prevailed in many areas of NSW since 2002. On the mid-north coast, below-average rainfall resulted in reduced riverine flows and the extended closure of intermittent estuaries within the Solitary Islands Marine Park. Patterns of structure of benthic infaunal communities were evaluated at the height of the drought to determine if they differed between closed, intermittent estuaries and permanently open estuaries within the region. Replicate van Veen grab samples were taken in the upper, mid- and lower reaches of six intermittent and three permanently open estuaries and sieved to retain the macrofauna. A range of physico-chemical measures was also taken at each sampling time. Multivariate analyses of assemblage data revealed a significant difference between the structure of the two estuary types and also among estuaries within each type. Differences between estuary types were attributable to small differences in the abundance of a number of taxa but also to the absence of the amphipod Urohaustorius metungi from most of the intermittent estuaries. In contrast, these small amphipods dominated communities in the lower reaches of the permanently open estuaries. Physico-chemical variables were highly variable among estuaries and were not strongly correlated with assemblage patterns. Correlations with catchment size were the strongest and, as most of the intermittent estuaries in the region are smaller than the permanently open estuaries, this confounds the interpretation of assemblage patterns in this preliminary study. In order to differentiate between the effects of catchment size and entrance status, the same estuaries need to be resurveyed during periods when at least some of the intermittent estuaries are open.  相似文献
